This month, Cape Fear Valley is celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a very special way-through the debut of its new Cape Fear Valley Breast Care Center. There's a lot to celebrate. The center offers patients an interdisciplinary approach to breast care with easy access and peace of mind-fast. This means that if you find a breast lump or experience a breast illness, you can expect to see a doctor within one to two days and receive appropriate imaging tests, a diagnosis and a treatment plan, if needed, in just one to two weeks as opposed to the usual one to two months longer! And the Breast Care Center accepts patients by physician referral or self referral. All of this is made possible thanks to the Breast Care Center's interdisciplinary team approach to holistic breast health. A dedicated commuincation Breast Care Center Coordinator and Certified Breast Health Navigator (BHN), Victoria Thomas, BSN, RN BHN, literally navigates patients through their treatment experience. Breast Care Center doctors see patients within one to two days. An onsite radiologist is available to read imaging tests (ultrasounds and mammograms) and provide a diagnosis in one day. The Breast Care Center's interdisciplinary team includes Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Radiologists, Pathologists, Surgeons, the Breast Care Center Coordinator and the patient's primary care physician. The team share an open line of communication. Breast Care Center physicians meet once every two weeks during Breast Conference to discuss each patient's care prior to treatment. If surgery is required as part of a patient's treatment, the Breast Care Center team is committed to patient-centered care and breast conservation. If needed, minimally invasive biopsies are performed within 24 to 48 hours, and patients have access to the latest procedures: fine need aspiration (FNA); core needle; stereo tactic, ultrasound-guided and surgical breast biopsies. Through the Breast Care Center, patients will also have access to outpatient breast surgery, clinical trials, genetic counseling, dietary recommendations, physical therapy and support groups. Dr. James Thomas, a General Surgeon in private practice, began contacting his colleagues about bringing a breast care center to Fayetteville more than a year ago. One of the first calls he made was to Dr. Deon Faillace, a General Surgeon in private practice. The two shared a parallel concern and similar interest. "We both saw the need for a user-friendly, expedited fast track for patients through the breast evaluation process," says Dr. Faillace. It didn't take long for the concept to catch on and gain momentum. "Everyone we've talked to has been very excited about offering this new level of breast care in our area" says Dr. Thomas. "As the center grows, we hope to add more staff, disciplines and specialties." Soon, Dr. Thomas approached Cape Fear Valley Administration, which was equally excited about and supportive of the project. "The Breast Care Center has been very well received," says Lynda Clark, Vice President for Professional Services. "It's encouraging to know so many share our desire to make the healthcare process easy for our patients-from dedication to treatment." "This center will provide a big boost for women's healthcare in this region." While the final touches are being placed on the center's physical location inside Cape Fear Valley Diagnostic Center, the program is already up and running. And Victoria is ready to help Breast Care Center patients participate in their own breast health. "We really want to empower women with knowledge, so that they're comfortable with the decisions they make regarding their breast health," she says. Women should also feel comfortable knowing complete breast care is right here at home. "There's no reason for women from Fayetteville or this region to go elsewhere for breast care," says Dr. Thomas. "It's all here." For more information on Cape Fear Valley's Breast Care Center or to schedule an appointment, please call (910) 609-6944. |
